TRADEMARK AND SERVICE MARK CLASSIFICATION RE-VISED
The IPO announced on 10 April 2002 that with effect from 12 April 2002, the Classification of Goods and Services appended to Article 49 of the Trademark Law Enforcement Rules will be expanded from 42 classes to 45. The main change is the separation of some of the services hitherto covered by Class 42 into the following three classes:
Class 43: Services for providing food and drink; temporary accommodation.
Class 44: Medical services; veterinary services; hygienic and beauty care for human beings or animals; agriculture, horti-culture and forestry services.
Class 45: Personal and social services rendered by others to meet the needs of indi-viduals; security services for the pro-tection of property and individuals.
In the eighth edition of the International Classi-fication of Products and Services under the Nice Agreement, the number of classes of services is expanded from eight to 11 (the number of goods classes remains at 34). Although the ROC is not a WIPO member, the IPO has amended the relevant classes and terms in the ROC classifi-cation in order to keep the classification of goods and services used in Taiwan for trademark and service mark registration purposes in line with the Nice classification.
