LABOR INSURANCE ACT UN-DER AMENDMENT

The Legislative Yuan has recently given its first reading to a bill to amend the Labor Insurance Act.

The main points of the proposed amendments include the following:

‧Compulsory enrolment in the Labor Insurance scheme is to be extended from employees of business entities with five or more employees to include all employees.

‧In view of the trend toward the extension of working life, the maximum age for compul-sory enrolment in the Labor Insurance scheme is to be raised from 60 to 65, in order to protect older workers.

‧Labor Insurance parenting benefits are to be increased: in addition to the current parenting subsidy of one month's insured salary, the bill provides for a further subsidy of two months' insured salary. This amount can be offset against the salary that the Labor Standards Act requires an employer to pay an employee during her two months' maternity leave. However, the employer must still make up the difference between the employee's insured salary and her actual salary for the two months.
