LOWER THRESHOLDS FOR HIRING DISABLED WORKERS
To assure equal employment opportunities for physically and mentally handicapped persons, the Legislative Yuan has enacted amendments to the Act for Protection of Physically and Mentally Disabled Citizens. The amended provisions reduce the thresholds of employee numbers above which public agencies and private organizations must employ disabled persons, and increase the proportion of disabled workers that must be employed by public-sector employers. The new provisions will take effect from July 2009.
In future, at least 1% of the employees of a pri-vate-sector employer with 67 or more employees must be physically or mentally disabled persons with the ability to work, and such employer must employ at least one disabled worker.
