UPDATE ON CD SID CODES

As reported in our November 1999 issue, on 6 September 1999 the Ministry of Economic Affairs announced that all CD discs intended for export must be marked with a Source Identification (SID) code to indicate their origin. However, no penalties were announced for violators. To show the government's determination to effectively combat CD piracy, the amendments to the Foreign Trade Law passed by the Legislative Yuan on 30 November include an explicit provision that persons who violate the requirement for marking export CDs, or who apply false markings, shall be subject to a warning, a fine of NT$30,000 to NT$300,000, or prohibition from importing or exporting goods for one to twelve months. In severe cases, companies may also be struck off the BOFT's registry of importers and exporters.
