FTC TO ASSIST DISCOUNT RETAILER IN ESTABLISHING SELF-REGULATORY CODE
A certain discount retailer was investigated by the FTC after being reported for repeated acts in violation of the FTL, such as demanding carry-ing fees and improperly demanding various forms of benefits. To assist the retailer in un-derstanding the relevant provisions of the FTL, in the interests of the enterprise's self-regulation, and to avoid further breaches of the law, the FTC is considering assisting the enterprise in estab-lishing a self-regulatory code, by way of admin-istrative guidance. This would be the first time the FTC has assisted an individual enterprise in establishing a self-regulatory code. According to press reports, the FTC intends to extend such self-regulation to include both companies fre-quently reported for FTL violations and compa-nies which contact the FTC of their own accord with a view to gaining a better understanding of the FTL.
